Jeet Kune Do And the 5 Ways Of Attack

Sifu Carrion stresses to his students how important it is to learn the five ways of attack. This will help his students understand and be more alert that there are several ways to strike at your opponent and not just by using one method or "style" of striking.

Here are a few examples of the 5 Ways of Attack :

ABC (Attack By Combination) - When you strike at your opponent with more than one strike; this can be a combination of hands and feet which may land at your opponent with more than one strike. This could be a boxer's jab cross hook, etc., or just a kicking combination of low hook kick to high hook kick, etc. (AGAIN JUST TO GIVE SOME EXAMPLES)

HIA (Hand Immobilization Attack) -
Is trapping hands. When you immobilize one or two of your opponent's hands using several different techniques, "GUM-SAO, pinning hand" or "PAK-SAO, slapping hand" , just to name a few. If done properly, this will enable you to strike without a counter strike from your opponent. This is also used with FIA (Foot Immobilization Attack). The combination together can be devastating.

PIA (Progressive Indirect Attack) - Distance and timing are the keys to PIA. This is when you want to strike at a certain reference point (a part of the body) but you need to clear your opponent's obstruction (defense) using several feints (movements of hands or feet) towards your opponent making your foe clear the main reference point to which you can strike at with a knockout blow.
SDA (Single Direct Attack) -
You strike at your opponent with a single blow. This can be a boxer's hook or right cross, JKD STRAIGHT LEAD PUNCH, BIU-GEE, finger jab, etc. (JUST TO GIVE A FEW EXAMPLES) It can also be a strike from your leg from a single hook kick or front push kick, etc.

ABD (Attack By Drawing) -
"Counter Fighting". The object is to lure your opponent into a position for a disabling strike, meaning leaving an opening in your defense (THIS IS DONE INTENTIONALLY TO SET UP YOUR OPPONENT) so when your opponent strikes at the opening you are ready to attack with a counter strike.
