Sifu
Tim Tackett
This
Jeet Kune Do and Filipino Martial Arts instructor has had a most
varied martial arts background. Tim's martial arts training started
in 1954 with Judo at the local YMCA. His serious training started
in 1962 in Taiwan. While in Taiwan, Tackett studied Hsing-I Kung
Fu, Chin Na, Tai Chi, and both Northern and Southern Shaolin boxing.
After returning from Taiwan in 1965, he opened a Kung Fu school
in Redlands, California. Tim Tackett began his journey in JKD
when he was honored by being asked to join Dan Inosanto's backyard
workout group.
Dan
had formed a group of talented and open minded students to carry
on in expanding and developing the art and science of Jeet-Kune-Do.
Simply stated, Jeet-Kune-Do is Bruce Lee's concept and philosophy
of developing the most efficient method of fighting (and living)
according to the individual's personal attributes, talents, and
taste. Tim was in these classes.
Although
Bruce was in Hong Kong most of the time, Bruce Lee would have
approved emphatically of what this talented group of innovators
were doing in his absence. Tim is a senior member of Dan Inosanto's
school. He received the rank of Senior Jeet Kune Do student in
1973 from Dan Inosanto and graduated from the Filipino Kali Academy
in 1976.
Currently
he is a Full Instructor in Jun Fan Martial Arts and an Associate
Instructor in the filipino Martial Arts. Like many JKD students,
Tackett has also received supplemental training in Wing Chun,
Western wrestling and boxing, and Thai boxing. He is currently
retired from teaching drama at Montclair High School in Montclair,
California.
Tackett
restricts his teaching to a small, nonprofit "backyard"
class in Redlands, California called the Wednesday Night Group.
The
Wednesday Night Group is nonprofit and meets weekly in Tim Tackett's
garage in "Redlands, California". It consists of eight
instructors and two to seven students most of whom will someday
be instructors themselves. They really are unique in that they
have more instructors than students some of which have studied
directly under "Sijo Bruce". The purpose of this group
is to preserve and promote Bruce Lee's art of Jeet Kune Do, to
help define and teach the core curriculum, not to confine them
but to liberate them, and to discover their personal expression
of Bruce Lee's art.
Sifu
Tackett also does seminars around the country. He has been an
innovator in applying JKD principles to football and has worked
with both the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers. Tackett
is the author of two books on Hsing-I Kung Fu and is co-author
with Larry Hartsell of Jeet Kune Do-Entering to Trapping to Grappling,
and Jeet Kune Do-Counterattack, Grappling Counters and Reversals
(Vol.2.) Tim and Chris Kent are co-authors of Jeet Kune Do Kickboxing.
Tim Tackett is currently a member of the Jeet Kune Do Nucleus
Group.
