At
the age of 24, Richard Bustillo (right) began studying JKD under
Bruce Lee at the Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute in Los Angeles China
town area.
Richard Bustillo identifies having an open mind about adopting
techniques from other styles as one of the most important lessons
he learned from Bruce Lee.
We
learn it all From our Martial Arts
We
learned it all from our martial arts. You the individual, is your
own best teacher. What we really need to know about ourselves
and how we perform throughout our daily life... was not discovered
at the end of graduate school. It came from our journey in martial
arts (JKD).
These
are the things we learned, practicing respect with one another
so that we may habitually respect those around us daily. We acquire
mental discipline from the strenuous class exercises, as we seldom
achieve by ourselves. Continuous sharing and helping others in
martial arts drills gives us the confidence in ourseleves. Live
a balanced life, as defined in our JKD symbol, to trian mentally
and work physically which results in inner peace. Putting equipment
back where it belongs, cleaning up our own mess, and apologizing
when we accidently hurt someone mentally or physically... are
some of the common sense qualities that can be developed through
habitual pracitice from our martial arts training.
"There
are no great men in this world, only great challenges which ordinary
men rise to meet."
Developing
an attitude that is accepted in this society is more important
than any skilled experience. We have learned that ability and
experience will only get us recognition. The right attitude will
earn us respect, success, and self-satisfaction.
As
I welcome you to our journey to the present level of the Jeet
Kune Do Society, please share with me your views and comments
about our present position. Also where do you see yourself, the
martial arts, and the Jeet Kune Do Society--Twenty to fifty years
from today?
"There
are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror
that reflects it."
